It was on the second floor where a gallery of oil and watercolor paintings covered each of the walls that Bea spotted something she had seen before.

“That watercolor painting was in Miss Hester’s house,” whispered Bea. “I’m sure of it.”

“I expect it’s a copy,” suggested Marge.

“No. It’s in the same frame. What does the tag say?”

Marge, the taller of the two ladies, leaned over a bookshelf and lifted a dangling beige tag.

“You’re right, it says from the Estate of Miss Eugenia Hester.”

“Estate? But she’s not dead.”

“How do you know that?”

“Caleb said he hadn’t seen her in years, but she leaves him notes.”

“Maybe,” said Marge. “He hasn’t seen her because she’s dead.”

“But I bought the house from her.”

But when she thought about it, not for the first time, Miss Hester’s name had not been on the documents, neither had her signature been on anything transferring the deed to Bea. Was she dead and Caleb hadn’t accepted it? Who paid him to work in the garden? Who gave him instructions? And who was Coral – a relative, an employee, a tenant?

“This is too expensive for you anyway,” stated Marge and Bea had to agree.

She wondered what paintings had ended up at Sotheby’s and when they got home she planned to check on their upcoming auctions.

But before she could think any more about Miss Hester and her possible demise, Marge reminded Bea that she had set a goal for finding out her child by December, and suggested they start searching on the internet how to go about it.
